Injury Prevention and Ergonomics
Injury prevention and ergonomic programs are designed to reduce the number of injuries occurring in the workplace.
Since the best way to treat an injury is to never get it in the first place, a proactive approach involving strategic planning to minimize injury should be taken by all employers and employees, especially where the risk of injury is high. This would include workers who sit for extended periods of time, perform repetitive movements, and workers who lift or move heavy objects.
All workplaces have, or should have, a risk evalualation for job tasks as part of their overall safety program. This involves assessing the risk of injury on all tasks that individuals are required routinely to carry out as part of their job description. Some of these tasks are significant and easy to identify, such as loading and unloading trucks or vehicles. But there are tasks that seem mundane in comparison, such as answering the telephone. All tasks that an individual performs in the line of employment can have safety risks, if not performed correctly. For more information regarding completing a risk evaluation, contact Workers Compensation Board of Alberta. There are resources available to assist any business in implementing one, if needed.
